I listened with great amusement at the comments made with regard to Monday's closure of the N2 over protests around the N2 Gateway Housing Project. I am a great proponent of continuous dialogue whenever community development is at stake. However the question that has always been challenging for me is how far you actually need to take consultations. Government leaders and the N2 Gateway Housing Project Developers appears to have reached that point where they feel that those opposed to the project will do anything to have it delayed. Failure to move people to a temporary site in Delft according to these stakeholders will further delay the start of phase 2. Amidst all this uncertainty the picture of Cape Town over the past 4 weeks has been one where it would appear that if you are dissatisfied with public policy discourse, you can shut down a major road which is a key wheel in the economic life of Cape Town. How are we going to be able to contain the further spread of this “Ring of Fire”, and ultimately put it out? Is it perhaps not time for us again to accelerate our commitment to find development solutions which is inclusive and innovative. I would love to hear your views on how we can find these solutions.
