Vision 2030 in the horizon : project update

Accelerate Cape Town is in the process of rolling out our headline project, Vision 2030.  Vision 2030 was born out of the wish by a group of business leaders in the region to turn the Cape into something that we refer to as the Southern Tiger; a region characterised by high, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, comparable to the Celtic Tiger of Ireland or the Asian Tigers of South-East Asia.

Vision 2030 will canvas the opinions of a broad range of leaders in the Cape Town city region, aiming to come up with an economic vision for the next twenty years, as well as a strategy for developing the key economic sectors that we must focus on to drive the required growth. The ultimate objective of the project is to influence business and policy direction in order to significantly increase business activity and investment in those sectors identified and agreed to be the most conducive to making the Cape a vibrant international business destination characterised by high, inclusive and sustainable growth (the Southern Tiger) by 2030.

As you might be aware, the first phase of the process was completed in August when world-renowned speakers and facilitators Benjamin and Rosamund Zander facilitated the Kick off phase of the project.  The workshop was attended by the Mayor of Cape Town and 100 leaders from a broad spectrum of business, government and community sectors.

The project has now moved into the next step which is called Visioning: This step involves gathering as broad a view of business leadership as possible, as well as the view of some other stakeholders and thought leaders and some public input, on what the long-term economic vision and economic development strategy for the region should be.

These inputs will be balanced by and tested against in-depth desk-based economic research to support what is viable.  The combined outputs will lead into a strategy development process conducted by a team made up of several Accelerate Cape Town members and using Deloitte’s methodology.  The emphasis will be on establishing key economic themes and focus sectors that it makes sense for us to support, not on an all-encompassing approach to everything about our future.

We will of course keep a progress update as the process moves forward.
