Message from the CEO
Would you believe that only a year ago this month Accelerate Cape Town was launched? And since then our membership has grown to represent twenty of the largest Cape businesses. This shows that Cape companies are determined to change the face of the region; to create a Southern Tiger, humming with opportunity.
As we grow, we are looking at more occasions to push forward the objective of connecting big business and other organisations interested in transforming the Cape Town region. This month, Accelerate Cape Town hosted a dinner for CEOs of big businesses and Vice Chancellors of the four Cape universities. The goal of the dinner was to create closer links between industry and academia, with the intention of driving the Cape’s potential to be known worldwide as a centre of knowledge and excellence. This was a very valuable first discussion in what needs to be an ongoing engagement to create the seeds of a vibrant knowledge economy.
We were also involved with assisting the Paris based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) meet a sample of representative big businesses as part of its territorial review of Cape Town and surrounding towns. The team’s comment was that they would have missed out on extremely valuable input if we had not introduced them to these business leaders.
We are currently forging ahead with more concrete projects, with the aim of engaging businesses, government and other partners in economic growth into a cohesive force aimed at finding innovative and creative solutions to help develop the Cape Town region into a leading economic region, a Southern Tiger.
